Karl Stuebner creates intricate sand-carved art glass.
Using a machine which he fashioned out of industrial equipment, Karl shoots a steady stream of sand onto a plate of glass thereby altering the surface producing shapes and textures not normally associated with the clear material. With steady hands, he cuts deep into the glass slowly adding volume in order to produce a three-dimensional image. Constantly changing air pressure, intuitively sensing depth and dimensionality while continually visualizing the design in his head. This is known as stage carving, the most complex and difficult form of glass etching. Glass is by far the most unforgiving of all mediums.
“It just happens to be what I do best…everyone has something that comes naturally to them, for me, this is it.”
Karl embarked on his current artistic endeavours more by chance than design. “My first real commission came about thirty years ago when a commercial glazier friend of mine said that his client, a resort inn, required a decorative mirror with their logo etched on it. Even though I had never even seen anyone sandblast glass, I said that I would take this job on. With a borrowed book from the library I found a glass etcher in town who leased me some time on their equipment. I just got it right away. It just made sense. It just came naturally.”
“Glass is this magical and mystical medium, anything that captures my eye is in danger of becoming my next glass sculpture.”
“When working on a sculptured glass panel, I’m not necessarily concerned about every detail; primarily I focus on the transmission of the passing light. The raised points capture light and the recesses capture the shadow, the deeper the hollows, the darker the greys. This delicate balance of light is the true essence of sculpture.”
Karl’s work is featured in luxury yachts, public institutions, and private collections globally.
